(English version is available below)

Together, we MAKE the better world POSSIBLE.

Before the first idea was written on a piece of paper, before the 12 participating school teams began brainstorming solutions to pressing social challenges, more than 70 young hackers from Catholic schools across Thailand embarked on an important journey by experiencing something far more valuable than innovation itself—they learned from role models who have already demonstrated that meaningful social change is not only possible, but achievable.

MISSION POSSIBLE Youth Social Hackathon : Season 3 officially opened at the Salesian Retreat House in Hua Hin, Prachuap Khiri Khan Province, bringing together young people aged 13–19 from 12 Catholic schools across the country. Over the course of three days, participants would immerse themselves in learning, collaboration, and hands-on problem solving while exploring new possibilities for building a better society through a Hackathon process that blends inspiration, creativity, and teamwork.

The opening ceremony began with a warm welcome from Fr. Nattawut Kitsawad, Vice Rector of Hua Hin Vitthayalai School, who expressed his delight that Hua Hin Vitthayalai School and the Salesian Retreat House had the opportunity to host young changemakers from across Thailand. He welcomed participants into a space designed not only for learning, but also for friendship, reflection, and hope—where young people could begin imagining the positive changes they wish to see in society.

Following the welcome, Dr. Chainarong Monthienvichienchai, Vice President of the Association of Catholic Education Council of Thailand, reflected on the spirit of Synodality—the call to “walk together.” He encouraged participants to embrace the values of listening, openness, and mutual respect while discerning solutions to today’s social challenges. Sustainable change, he emphasized, cannot be achieved by individuals working alone. Rather, it grows when people journey together, respect different perspectives, and remain willing to learn from one another.

The day’s message was further enriched by Dr. Sasikorn Suangburanakul, President of the Catholic School Teachers Association of Thailand, who invited the young participants to recognize the power of positive collaboration. When people with different experiences, talents, and perspectives choose to work together toward a common purpose, the results often exceed what any individual could accomplish alone.

Concluding the opening session, Dr. Peter Rachada Monthienvichienchai, Executive Director of LiCAS News, introduced the overall Hackathon journey, explaining its structure, rules, and the roles each participant would play throughout the three-day program. More importantly, he reminded the hackers that MISSION POSSIBLE is not simply a competition. It is a learning experience designed to help young people listen deeply, think critically about real social issues, collaborate effectively as a team, and discover that they themselves have the potential to become agents of positive change

Yet the highlight of Day One came when participants met the four mentors whose lives, although remarkably different, are united by one shared purpose: using their unique gifts and experiences to create a better society.

Mentor Dr. Hataitip Jirathun, a resilient advocate dedicated to improving healthcare access and quality of life for patients, shared her deeply personal journey of overcoming multiple battles with cancer. Through stories of perseverance, she demonstrated how a positive mindset can become a powerful source of strength during life’s most difficult moments. She encouraged the young hackers to believe that every challenge they encounter can become an opportunity for growth, provided they choose to see the possibilities hidden within adversity. After each Inspiration Session, participants took 15 minutes to reflect and note what they had learned. These reflections aren’t just personal—they will become seeds for the solutions they co-create during the hackathon, applying those insights to tackle some of the world’s most pressing crises. This is where listening transforms into action.

Next, Mentor Ada Chirapaisarnkul, a passionate social innovator and advocate for youth leadership, invited participants to ask themselves one simple yet powerful question:

“What is your superpower?”

– Mentor Ada Chirapaisarnkul –

For Mentor Ada, meaningful change does not begin with being the smartest person in the room. Instead, it begins with discovering one’s unique strengths and choosing to use them in service of others. When each person recognizes their own abilities and has the courage to act, the world gains another changemaker capable of making a real difference.

Meanwhile, Mentor Dr. Santi Lapbenjakul, a role model for building a caring society where no one is left behind, shared his experience of working alongside local communities. He emphasized that real change does not come from bringing ready-made solutions to people, but from listening, learning, and working together with communities so that everyone has a voice in shaping their own future.

Mentor Dr. Santi challenged the young participants with a simple yet powerful reflection:

“I have never failed to do something. I’ve only not finished it yet.”

– Mentor Dr. Santi –

His words reminded the students that what we often call failure is simply part of the learning process, and that every obstacle is an opportunity to grow stronger.

The final inspiration session featured Mentor Weeraphong Taweesak, a role model who inspires social change through art, storytelling, and music. Together with a band he formed by inviting the young hackers themselves to join, he demonstrated how creativity can become a powerful force for connection and transformation.

Veerapong encouraged the participants to think beyond one-off projects and embrace systems thinking, noting:

“In Thailand, we rarely design systems. We mostly create projects.”

He also left the students with another powerful mindset:

“Whenever we encounter a problem, we should see it as a chance to gain wisdom. Every challenge makes us better.”

– Mentor Weeraphong-

For Mentor Weeraphong, genuine listening is the starting point for designing meaningful change. Only when we truly understand people can we understand the problems they face—and only by understanding those problems can we develop the wisdom needed to create solutions that truly matter.

Throughout the first day, the atmosphere at the Salesian Retreat House was filled with inspiration, meaningful conversations, new friendships, and eager anticipation for the journey ahead. Although no prototypes had yet been built and no projects had reached completion, something equally significant had already taken place. The participants began to believe that ordinary people, through compassion, courage, and collaboration, can create extraordinary change.

As Day One came to a close, the hackers left not with all the answers, but with new questions, renewed inspiration, and a growing confidence that they could become part of the solution. More importantly, they carried with them the belief that this experience might empower them to transform what once seemed impossible into something possible—for their communities, for society, and for a better world beginning today.

Together, we MAKE the better world POSSIBLE.
